After Effects of Vestibular Neuronitis

Vestibular Neuritis is a condition that begins in the inner ear and directly effects balance. This condition can cause problems with vertigo and dizziness, and may cause nausea and vomiting in severe cases.
  1. Cause

    • Vestibular neuritis is caused when a nerve inside the ear swells. This vestibular nerve transmits information about equilibrium and balance to the brain.

    Effect

    • When the vestibular nerve becomes swollen, it causes a sensation of spinning which can effect balance. This feeling is known as vertigo.

    Sources

    • The nerve swelling responsible for vestibular neuritis is often the result of a cold, flu or other viral infection. In some cases, flu symptoms are not present when dizziness occurs.

    Diagnosis

    • Diagnosis of vestibular neuritis is usually determined from after effects of the condition, such as vertigo and nausea. Eye movement and hearing tests can also be used, as these are affected by the condition.

    Treatment

    • The condition can sometimes clear up on its own with time. In cases where recovery takes longer, balance exercises can be practiced to limit adverse after effects.
