What Are the Causes of Cysts on Adrenal Glands?

Unseen by the naked eye, the body contains adrenal glands that when functioning correctly affect a person's physical and mental well being. However, a cyst present creates various complications to a person's health.
  1. Location

    • The adrenal glands can be found at the top portion of each kidney. Three arteries deliver the blood supply to each gland.

    Function

    • The adrenal glands primary purpose relates to the production of hormones. They regulate a person's physical or psychological response to stress.

    Symptoms

    • If the adrenal gland makes insufficient amounts of hormones, one of the first indications could be fatigue or sickness. A signal for cysts may be stomach and/or back pain, blood in the urine or a fever.

    Causes

    • A cyst in the adrenal glands, though rare, may form due to a bacterial infection or parasites. However, a more serious cause develops as a result of a pituitary tumor that affects the body's hormone production.

    Prevention/Solution

    • When a doctor discovers a cyst, he may choose not to remove it if it appears benign. Treatment depends upon the size and location and may be regulated with medication and regular check-ups if surgery and radiation are not necessary.

    Warning

    • Neglecting appointments with a doctor may cause life-threatening results when the medication fails to regulate hormone production. See a doctor as soon as possible with any sign of difficulties in this area.
