Coughing & Neck Pain

When coughing is accompanied by neck pain, it often indicates a serious condition. Both coughing and neck pain are common symptoms, though, so it can often be difficult for doctors to make a definitive diagnosis. In some cases, coughing and neck pain may indicate a relatively common and easily treated condition, such as sinusitis, but in most cases, these two symptoms often indicate a serious and difficult-to-treat condition, such as certain types of cancer.

  1. Sinusitis

    • Sinusitis is a condition in which the sinus cavities, located behind the eyes and nose, become inflamed or infected. According to Wrong Diagnosis, this condition is quite common in the United States and affects approximately 37 million people every year. Wrong Diagnosis states that there are approximately 91 different medical conditions that can cause sinusitis, but the most common include asthma, hay fever and allergies. In addition to coughing and neck pain, other symptoms of this condition may include severe headache, sneezing, aches and tiredness. Sinusitis is most often treated with medications such as antibiotics, decongestants, pain relievers and antihistamines.

    Hip Cancer

    • Hip cancer is a type of cancer that affect the hip bones. According to Wrong Diagnosis, hip cancer can cause a number of symptoms, such as coughing, neck pain, hip fracture, hip pain, trouble moving hips, dizziness, sweating and pale skin. Treating hip cancer most commonly involves chemotherapy (cancer-killing drugs) and radiation. Some patients may also benefit from pain medications, antibiotics or a bone marrow transplant (if the cancer is in the bone marrow).

    Larynx Cancer

    • Larynx cancer is a type of cancer that affects the larynx, and sometimes the areas near it. The larynx is the voice box. In addition to coughing and neck pain, Wrong Diagnosis states that this type of cancer also may cause voice changes, hoarseness and a feeling that there is a lump in the throat. This type of cancer is most often treated with radiation and chemotherapy. In some cases, surgery may be used as well.

    Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm

    • A thoracic aortic aneurysm is a condition in which the aorta (biggest artery in the human body) experiences bulging and weakness. This condition can be caused by certain medical conditions such as syphilis and atherosclerosis, which is a buildup of fat in the arteries. It can also be caused by smoking, obesity and a high-fat diet. According to Wrong Diagnosis, this condition can cause coughing and neck pain as well as jaw pain, back pain and chest pain. According to the Vascular Web Organization, this condition can be treated with watchful waiting or surgery.

    Hurthle Cell Thyroid Cancer

    • Hurthle cell thyroid cancer is a type of cancer that affects the thyroid gland. According to Wrong Diagnosis, this type of thyroid cancer is quite rare. In addition to coughing and neck pain, other symptoms such as trouble breathing, a lump in the neck, hoarseness and trouble swallowing may occur. Chemotherapy and radiation are often used to treat this cancer. A surgical procedure that removes the thyroid gland, referred to as a thyroidectomy, can also be performed.
