Herbs for Vertigo

Vertigo can give you the sense of falling. You'll feel dizzy or faint or maybe that the room is spinning. It's a problem related to balance and equilibrium that happens when the nervous system gets conflicting information from the inner ear, eyes, muscles and skin. For those who would like to treat it without having to take a medication with possible side effects, consider herbs.
  1. Ginkgo Biloba

    • The leaves of the ginkgo tree have been used to treat a number of ailments, which makes it one of the best-recommended herbal medications. Gingko leaves contain flavonoids and terpenoids, which are two types of antioxidants. These antioxidants destroy free radicals in the body, which can cause damage to cell membranes and DNA.

    Gingko For Vertigo

    • According to Vitaganic.com, standardized Ginkgo biloba reduced vertigo symptoms in the elderly patients who were given 40 mg three times a day for a year. Gingko biloba was also reported to significantly reduce vertigo of unknown cause in preliminary and double-blind trials. In these trials, patients were given 120 mg per day in preliminary trials and 160 mg per day in the double-blind trials, for three months.

    Forms

    • There are a variety of ways you can purchase Ginkgo biloba. These include standardized extracts with 24 percent to 32 percent flavonoids and 6 percent to 12 percent terpenoids, capsules, tablets, liquid extracts and dried leaf for teas.

    Possible Interactions

    • Ginkgo can alter your metabolism and this could affect how well some other medications may work. If you are being treated with anticonvulsant medications, antidepressant medications, antihypertensive medications, blood-thinning medications, blood-sugar lowering medications, cyclosporine, thiazide diuretics or Trazodone, talk to your doctor before taking gingko biloba.

    Other Herbs

    • While ginkgo biloba is most often recommended for vertigo, there are a few other herbs that could help with vertigo. These are butcher's broom, cayenne, chaparral tea, powdered ginger and dandelion extract.
