Help for Neuropathy
Peripheral neuropathy or nerve palsy is a problem with the nervous system. Peripheral nerves transmit information from your brain and spinal cord to the rest of your body. They also conduct sensations like heat and touch to your brain. If these nerves are damaged in some way, it can cause problems.-
Why You Need Help
-
Peripheral neuropathy can cause muscle weakness or a complete loss of control over muscles controlled by the damaged nerves. You might experience numbness, tingling, pain or sensitivity to touch. Your nerves also control some of the functions of the internal organs. If these nerves experience problems, you could experience problems caused by organs that aren't functioning properly. Some such problems might be diarrhea caused by digestive problems or a bladder that leaks urine.
When To Seek Help
-
If you begin to feel unusual tingling, weakness or pain in your hands and feet, go see your doctor. Your best chance of getting better begins with getting help early. An early diagnosis can help you control your symtoms and prevent further damage to your nerves.
Managing Pain
-
If you are diagnosed with neuropathy, your doctor will want to try and fix the cause. If the nerve damage can be corrected, neuropathy will most likely improve on its own. Failing that, the doctor probably will prescribe a medication to help with the pain and symptoms. Mild pain can be treated with over-the-counter medication, but for help with the more severe symptoms, your doctor might prescribe anti-seizure medications, a lidocaine patch or anti-depressants.
Prevention
-
The best help for neuropathy may be by working to prevent it. This is particularly important for diabetics. Diabetes can cause neuropathy, so make sure to control your blood sugar. If you have an alcohol problem, seek treatment to avoid neuropathy. Eat a healthy diet rich in vitamin B-12.
Lifestyle Changes
-
Also make lifestyle changes that will help you avoid neuropathy or at least manage the symptoms. An exercise program can help you control pain and your blood sugar levels. Stop smoking to improve your circulation, which can help you avoid problems caused by neuropathy brought on by diabetes. Avoid prolonged pressure that can reduce circulation and bring on diabetes-related problems.
