The most common side effects while using DMSA are appetite loss, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and soft stools. Side effects are normal and may require an adjustment period. If symptoms worsen, then contact a physician.
Serious Side Effects

DMSA rare side effects include chills, fever, syncope (fainting) and rash. If abnormal side effects occur, seek medical attention immediately to prevent adverse incidents.
Precautions

DMSA is classified as a radioactive material and proper handling will be required. The dosage is administered in injection form and should be used between ten minutes to four hours after preparation.
Warning

DMSA contains sulfhydryl compounds that could make urine, feces and gas present with a sulfuric smell. The side effect is normal and requires no medical treatment.
Other Uses

DMSA is also used during diagnostic testing to perform a DMSA scan. This scan is performed on children to test the anatomy and physiology of the kidneys for a renal disorder.
