Sweating is a normal and healthy function of the body that is necessary for removing waste and toxins from the body. However, excessive sweating, especially in cool conditions, can be caused by a number of reasons and can be embarrassing. Excessive armpit sweat or primary axillary hyperhidrosis can be due to medical problems, such as thyroid problems, malignancy and diabetes. Since excessive sweating in the armpits is considered a medical condition, it can be treated in a number of ways including with special antiperspirants and even sweat-gland removal surgeries. Instructions

    • 1

Use medications for excessive sweating that include sedatives, beta-blockers and anticholinergics. Make sure you check the side effects of these medications, as the majority are not specific to treating hyperhidrosis.

    • 2

Apply antiperspirants that help with excessive sweating, these will contain aluminum chloride hexahydrate. Apply the antiperspirant at night before you go to sleep.

    • 3

Make an appointment with a dermatologist if the excessive sweating doesn't stop. If medications, antiperspirants and topical cream don't stop the problem, then the dermatologist may recommend that you have an iontophoresis treatment. The treatment applies a mild electrical current to the desired area to reduce the production of sweat.

Have Botox treatment performed if the iontophoresis treatment doesn't work. This is medication consisting of a toxin that is injected into your armpit. The treatment will paralyze the nerves that are causing the excessive sweating.

Have endoscopic sympathectomy surgery as a last resort. The surgery consists of removing a portion of the sweat gland that is causing the excessive sweating. The surgery is safe for the treatment of hyperhidrosis and will help stop sweating palms and hands as well.
