What are the Causes of Tingling Around the Lips & Mouth?

A tingling sensation (paresthesias) around your lips may indicate a variety of possible conditions, such as an allergic reaction, oral herpes, hypocalcemia or hypoparathyroidism. Tingling of your mouth may indicate a number of conditions.
  1. Allergic Reaction

    • Tingling lips may indicate an allergic reaction. This may be a reaction to a component of your facial wash, moisturizer, toothpaste, cosmetics or fragrance.

    Prodromal Herpes Symptoms

    • The herpes simplex virus causes oral herpes (cold sores), which often is preceded by a prodrome, a period of paresthesias (itching or tingling) around your lips and mouth.

    Hypocalcemia

    • Hypocalcemia is characterized by diminished levels of calcium in your bloodstream. Tingling of the lips is one of the symptoms.

    Hypoparathyroidism

    • Hypoparathyroidism is a condition in which your parathyroid glands are not producing adequate amounts of parathyroid hormones. These hormones are necessary for proper regulation of your body's calcium levels.

    Mouth Tingling

    • Paresthesias around your mouth could have many causes, such as leukemia, anemia, tumor of the salivary gland, yeast infection of the mouth, food allergies, hypothyroidism, medication reactions, vitamin deficiencies, celiac disease, Guillain-Barre syndrome and oral cancer.
