Chlamydia Psittaci Symptoms

The bacteria Chlamydia psittaci causes an infection known as psittacosis. Unlike a similar sounding sexually transmitted disease, the C. psittaci bacteria is transmitted from birds and their droppings. While very rare, the disease can be dangerous if not promptly treated.
  1. Pulmonary Symptoms

    • Psittacosis can cause blood-tinged sputum, a dry cough and shortness of breath.

    Neurological Symptoms

    • Infection by Chlamydia psittaci may cause headache and fatigue.

    General Symptoms

    • Fever, chills and muscle aches may present with psittacosis.

    Severe Symptoms

    • Endocarditis, hepatitis and severe pneumonia may occasionally occur with untreated psittacosis.

    Incubation

    • Symptoms generally start to appear 5 to 19 days after exposure. Anyone who works with birds and exhibits symptoms should seek medical care to confirm the diagnosis.
