Loose Skin & Weight Loss

Loose folds of skin may be left hanging from your body if you lose a large amount of weight, whether by dieting or weight loss surgery.
  1. Causes

    • You are more likely to develop hanging skin if you lose a lot of weight quickly (like 100 pounds in six months). How much loose skin will result also depends on your age and the elasticity of your skin.

    Areas Affected

    • Many areas of your body can be affected, such as the abdomen, arms, thighs, buttocks and face.

    Disadvantages

    • Folds of loose skin can be unattractive, limit movement and lead to problems such as sores, rashes and infections.

    Diet and Exercise

    • Your skin may firm up if you exercise regularly and your muscle tone improves. Follow a health diet and keep well hydrated.

    Cosmetic Surgery

    • If diet and exercise don't help, another option is cosmetic surgery. Discuss this with your doctor. It's best to wait about two years before electing surgery.
