Vasomotor Rhinitis Symptoms

Vasomotor rhinitis, also called non-allergic rhinitis, is nasal inflammation and affects both children and adults. Symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis are similar to those of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) but are not caused by allergies.
  1. Symptoms

    • Vasomotor rhinitis symptoms include sneezing, runny nose and congestion. Symptoms may be constant or come and go.

    Other Symptoms

    • Vasomotor rhinitis does not usually cause itching. If you suffer from itchy eyes, nose and throat you may have allergic rhinitis instead.

    Causes

    • Many things can trigger vasomotor rhinitis symptoms. Causes can include smoke, cooking, air pollution, spicy foods, alcohol, dust mites, stress, certain medications and weather changes.

    Treatment

    • For mild symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis, avoid the triggers and use home treatment such as rinsing nasal passages using a bulb syringe. Medications and surgery are available to treat more severe cases.

    Considerations

    • Consult your doctor if your vasomotor rhinitis symptoms are severe or if home treatments and over-the-counter medications are ineffective.
