Dysmetabolic Syndrome X

Dysmetabolic syndrome x is used to describe a group of factors that increase a person's chances of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Other names for dysmetabolic syndrome x include metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance syndrome, syndrome x, obesity syndrome and Reaven's syndrome.

    • According to Labtestsonline.org, the World Health Organization established the current definition of dysmetabolic syndrome x in 1998.

    Factors

    • The factors involved in a diagnosis of dysmetabolic syndrome x include a waistline measurement over 40 for men and 35 for women, blood pressure over 130/85, and having high triglycerides, high fasting blood glucose readings, and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels (the good cholesterol) in the blood.

    • According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, 47 million people in the United States have dysmetabolic syndrome x.

    Warning

    • Without proper treatment, people with dysmetabolic syndrome x can develop problems from diabetes and cardiovascular disease within 15 years.

    Prevention/Solution

    • To prevent or treat dysmetabolic syndrome x, lose weight, exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet of no more than 50 percent carbohydrates, and limit alcohol consumption, along with treating underlying conditions.
