Balanitis Treatment
Balanitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the head of the penis and the foreskin. The primary cause of the inflammation is bad hygiene, though there are a variety of other causes, including diabetes, infection and even something as simple as not washing off the soap after bathing. Treatment is dependent on the underlying cause of the inflammation and can include anything from medication to surgery.-
Symptoms
-
Balanitis often presents with the following symptoms: a red, swollen foreskin or penis, particularly the head; rash on the head of the penis; a discharge that is foul smelling that is often accompanied by a tightening of the foreskin; and localized pain and itching of the penis and foreskin. If you experience any of the symptoms, seek medical help immediately, as a lack of treatment can lead to progression of the condition. Additionally, it the symptoms could be indicative of a far more serious underlying condition.
Treatment
-
The first step in treating balanitis is to determine the underlying cause. If caused by a fungal or bacterial infection, treatment might involve oral or topical antibiotics or anti-fungal medications. Other possible ways to treat the inflammation include topical steroids and antiseptics, or a compress comprised of diluted vinegar, Burow's solution or potassium permanganate. Topical steroids should only be used for a short period, no more than three or four days, and discontinuing their use can cause balanitis symptoms to flare. This is often the result of steroid dependency. If the condition does not respond to these treatments or if it is recurring, the best option is circumcision, surgical removal of the foreskin.
Prevention
-
The best way to ensure balanitis is adequately treated and to prevent it from occurring in the first place is to practice proper hygiene. Always keep the penis dry, and wash underneath the foreskin to prevent bacteria from collecting, which can lead to infection. This is achieved through pulling back the foreskin to expose the head of the penis and washing gently with warm water. do not use soap as this could irritate the skin. Before relaxing the foreskin and returning it to it normal position, dry the head of the penis off thoroughly.
