Avonex is a beta interferon protein that helps the body fight different types of infection. The medication is used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis and will slow the onset of physically disabilities from developing. As with most types of medications, a number of side effects that can come as a result of using Avonex.-
Common Side Effects

As mentioned, certain side effects are associated with using this medication. Some of these include headache, dizziness, stomach pain, and a stuffy nose. While these are considered the most common problems that have been associated with using this drug, they are very rare and only affect a small number of users.
Severe Side Effects

Unfortunately, a number of severe side effects are associated with using Avonex. Some of these side effects include anxiety, depression, sudden mood changes, thoughts of suicide, insomnia, weakness, easy bruising and bleeding, seizures, restlessness, numbing or tingling in the hands and feet, painful or burning urination, fevers, chills, body aches, nausea, stomach pain, low fever, dark urine, clay colored stools, and yellowing of the skin and eyes.

Avonex has been known to cause dizziness and drowsiness in some users and it is recommended not to operate any type of machinery (including automobiles) while using this medication. Please consult with your doctor if you suffer from any of the following ailments: kidney disease, liver disease, epilepsy, heart disease, thyroid disorder, congestive heart failure or a history of depression or suicidal behavior.

Always use Avonex in direct conjunction with your doctor's orders and never exceed the recommended dosage instructions written on the label. Avonex is administered through injection directly into a muscle. The injection should take place in a medical setting and should be performed by a medical professional. In order to ensure that the medication is working properly, your doctor will perform blood tests to monitor the medication's effects.
