The Effects of Librium

Librium is a medication used in the treatment of anxiety and withdrawal symptoms found in recovering alcoholics. The drug works by slowing down the chemicals in the brain, which in turn makes the symptoms less harsh on users. As with most anxiety medications, there are a number of side effects associated with using Librium.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • As mentioned, certain side effects come as a result of using this medication. Some include dizziness, clumsiness, headache, confusion, increased daytime drowsiness, lightheadedness, lack of coordination, unusual weakness and unsteadiness. While these are considered the most common side effects that can come from using the drug, they only affect a small number of users.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Unfortunately, there are also some severe side effects that can come as a result of using Librium. These severe side effects include hives, rash, tightness of the chest, difficulty breathing, swelling of the mouth and tongue and yellowing of the skin or eyes. These side effects are also rare and do not affect a large number of users.

    Important Safety Information

    • Librium has been known to cause increased dizziness and drowsiness in users, so it is recommended that users do not operate any type of machinery (including automobiles) while using this medication. Avoid drinking alcohol or any other type of depressants while taking Librium because the drug has been known to increase its side effects. This medication has also been known to cause damage to an unborn fetus, so do not use it if you are pregnant.

    Usage

    • Always use Librium exactly as instructed by your doctor and never take the medication in excess of the dosage recommendations written on the label. It is important not to stop taking this medication at any point during the course of treatment as a missed dose will cause withdrawal symptoms to worsen. If you miss a dosage of Librium, take it as soon as possible. Never take two doses of the medication at the same time.

    Warning

    • If any of these side effects sound familiar, please contact your doctor immediately for an adjusted treatment method.

If an overdose of Librium is suspected, contact your local poison center immediately and head directly to the nearest emergency room.

Librium is meant in the treatment of anxiety and withdrawal symptoms in recovering alcoholics only and should never be used recreationally.
