Testosterone Replacement Dangers

Testosterone is the male sex hormone that is also responsible for muscular strength, energy and brain function. It is also seen in women, but in lower levels. As people age, their levels of testosterone naturally go down. When this happens, testosterone replacement is sometimes called upon, which can come with some dangers.
  1. Breasts

    • Male breast tissue can end up accumulating, causing male breasts to enlarge. The medical term for this is gyneclamastia.

    Prostate

    • The prostate can become affected from testosterone replacement. The urination stream can become decreased.

    Sleep

    • Sleep apnea is a condition where you stop breathing several times while you are sleeping. This can happen with testosterone replacement.

    Heart

    • Heart disease can possibly occur as a result of your body producing too many red blood cells.

    Skin

    • The skin can develop acne and become very oily. Baldness can also develop.

    Shrinkage

    • The testicles can also be affected by testosterone therapy. Shrinkage can occur and sperm counts can also become lower.
