Neupro Side Effects

Nuepro is a skin patch medication used in the treatment of the early signs of Parkinson's Disease. The medication works by acting the same way as the chemical dopamine that is naturally produced in the body, but it produced in low levels of those individuals diagnosed with Parkinson's. As with any type of medication, a number of side effects are associated with using the drug.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • As mentioned, certain side effects come as a result of using Neupro patches. Some of these side effects include weight gain, redness, swelling, runny nose, diarrhea, increased urination, dizziness, weakness, mild drowsiness, headache, insomnia, blurred vision and swelling of the hands and feet. While these are considered the most common side effects of the drug, they actually only affect a small number of users.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Unfortunately, a number of severe side effects are associated with using this medication. Some of these side effects include extreme drowsiness (including falling asleep suddenly even after feeling wide awake), fainting, nausea, lightheadedness, difficulty breathing, severe headache, hallucinations, and restless muscle movements. These side effects are also very rare and are reported by only a small number of users.

    Important Safety Information

    • If you have allergies to rotigotine, povidone, or silicone, do not use this medication for any reason. Also, please inform your doctor if you suffer from any of the following ailments before using Neupro: asthma or any allergies, heart disease, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, epilepsy, tremors, or uncontrolled muscle movements. The medication is listed as FDA pregnancy category C, meaning that it may be harmful to an unborn baby.

    Usage

    • Always use Neupro directly as instructed by your doctor and never wear more patches than were originally prescribed. Never cut or tear a Neupro patch and be sure to apply it once per day to a clean, dry patch of skin. It is recommended to wear the patch somewhere on either your stomach, hip, thigh, shoulder, upper arm, or on your lower back. The Neupro patch is usually worn for 24-hour periods of time before replacement.

    Warning

    • If you experience any of the side effects listed in this article, contact your physician immediately.

If an overdose of Neupro is suspected, contact your local poison center and head directly to the emergency room.

Neupro patches are used in the treatment of early symptoms of Parkinson's Disease only, and should never be used for any other medical purpose unless specifically prescribed by your doctor.
