Conditions and Symptoms of Frequent Urination
Frequent urination is the need to urinate more often than you should, and when it happens at night it's called nocturia. It can be caused by a variety of illnesses, including kidney infection, an overactive bladder, enlarged prostate, infection of the prostate or diabetes. Read on to find out more, and, of course, consult with your physician if your symptoms worsen or if you require medical assistance.-
Urinary Tract Infection
-
A urinary tract infection (UTI) can affect any part of your urinary system, including your urethra and bladder. The urethra is the tube urine passes through when you urinate. Additional symptoms of a UTI can include a fever, continuous urge to urinate, burning sensation while urinating, blood in the urine, and foul-smelling or cloudy urine.
Overactive Bladder
-
An overactive bladder causes a sudden urge to urinate---and that you usually can't ignore. Symptoms include urinating eight or more times in 24 hours, waking two or more times a night to urinate, and the inability to control urination.
Enlarged Prostate
-
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland in the male body beneath the bladder that surrounds the urethra. When the prostate becomes enlarged, it puts pressure on the urethra, which causes difficulty urinating. Symptoms of an enlarged prostate include a weak urine stream, stopping and starting while urinating, difficulty starting a urine stream, dribbling at the end of urination, straining while urinating, frequently needing to urinate, increased need to urinate at night and blood in the urine.
Prostate Infection
-
Prostatitis is an infection of the prostate gland and is marked by fever, chills, burning or pain during urination, difficulty urinating, frequent urination, the repeated urge to urinate, pain between the penis and rectum, discomfort in the penis or testicles, painful ejaculations and pain in the lower back or stomach.
Diabetes
-
Diabetes occurs when your body stops making enough insulin, which is the type 1 version of the disease. Type 2 diabetes is a result of too much sugar in the blood as a result of the body's resistance to insulin. Cells need insulin to produce energy. Symptoms of type 1 diabetes include frequent urination, increased thirst, extreme hunger, weight loss, fatigue and blurred vision. Type 2 diabetes is marked by frequent urination, increased thirst and/or hunger, weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, frequent infections, slow-healing sores and areas of darkened skin.
