Fatty Liver Syndrome
Fatty liver syndrome results, as the name indicates, from the accumulation of fat inside the liver. Many factors contribute to fatty liver; in most cases, poor diet and a unhealthy weight are primary culprits. But regardless of the cause, you can reverse fatty liver and improve your health.-
Signs & Symptoms
-
Unlike most medical conditions, symptoms are seldom seen with fatty liver syndrome--especially in the early stages. But if left untreated, fatty liver disease may worsen and impair liver function. When this happens, you may experience pain in the right side of your stomach and unusual fatigue.
Diagnosis
-
Doctors use numerous methods to diagnose fatty liver syndrome. Initially, they'll check your liver enzyme levels. Normal levels indicate healthy liver function, whereas higher levels signal a problem. If your levels are above a normal range, your doctor will likely recommend an ultrasound, MRI or other imaging test to closely examine the liver.
Low-Fat Diet
-
A low-fat diet is crucial when trying to reverse fatty liver syndrome. A high-fat diet and excessive calorie consumption normally contributes to this condition. Practice better eating habits and learn how to live on less food. Read food labels and avoid fatty and sugary foods. Choose low-calorie snacks, and eat a generous portion of vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Drink water instead of sodas, alcohol and caffeinated beverages.
Physical Activity/Exercise
-
Exercise is a healthy way to burn excess calories and cure fatty liver syndrome. The more you work out, the more fat you'll burn. Gradually, you'll reduce the amount of fat in your liver cells. Start jogging, visit the gym or join a sports team. Plan for at least 30 minutes of activity a day.
Risk Factors
-
The chances of developing fatty liver is higher for certain people: If you're obese, overweight, take medications, or have diabetes, high cholesterol or high triglycerides, schedule an annual physical to receive a liver function test. Early detection is necessary to quickly reverse fatty liver and prevent permanent damage.
