Human Growth Hormone Therapy

Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is responsible for organ maintenance and tissue growth. This hormone is produced inside of the pituitary gland, which is a pea size gland located inside of the brain. At the start of life, there is a large amount of HGH produced. But, as the body starts to age, it produces less and less of this hormone. Supplement companies claim that HGH slows the aging process, but according to the Mayo Clinic, there isn't much evidence that backs up these claims. However, some people have an HGH deficiency, which can be helped by prescription grade HGH.
  1. Symptoms of HGH Hormone Deficiency

    • People who suffer from HGH hormone deficiencies may have symptoms such as joint pain, muscle soreness, swelling of the arms and swelling of the legs. Talk with your doctor about these symptoms, and ask if you may be experiencing a HGH deficiency.

Taking prescription grade HGH can increase the density of bones, muscle mass, cut back on body fat and make daily activities easier. This medication should be administered through injection, which requires a doctor's prescription.

    Cost of HGH Supplements

    • HGH supplements are expensive, costing $1,000 or more (as of August 2009) for a month's supply. If you have insurance, check to make sure they cover the prescription. If they won't pay for the medication (or you don't have insurance), check out programs like the Prescription Assistance Program (see Resources). This is an organization that strives to make prescription medication available to individuals at little to no cost.

    Side Effects

    • While taking this medication, it's important to watch out for side effects, such as water retention and unexplained hair growth. Although these side effects aren't very common, they may indicate complications resulting from the medication.

Also, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, there is a concern that taking HGH may be linked to cancer, and promotes the growth of tumor cells. However, there is still more research needed in this area.
