Natural Cures for Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are benign, muscular growths that develop in the uterine wall. According to the Mayo Clinic, they affect almost three out of every four women. A number of treatments, including surgical procedures and pharmaceutical drugs, are available for use in removing fibroids and alleviating their symptoms. There are also a number of natural treatments that can be used to treat this condition.
  1. Essential Oils

    • Essential oils such as evening primrose, borage and flaxseed are used to treat uterine fibroids. These herbal oils are rich in essential fatty acids, which have natural, potent anti-inflammatory properties. Taking 2 to 3 tablespoons a day helps to relieve inflammation associated with fibroids.

    Herbal Tea

    • Herbal tea can be brewed from a number of herbs that help to shrink fibroids. One tea can be brewed from 2 teaspoons each of cramp bark, burdock, motherwort and wild yam and one teaspoon each of mullein leaves, prickly ash bark and ginger. Place the herbs into a bowl and cover with 1 quart of boiling water. Allow the herbs to steep for at least 10 to 15 minutes and then strain it into a pitcher. Drink a cup of this tea twice a day.

    Castor Oil Compress

    • Castor oil compresses are a widely-used folk remedy to relieve the painful symptoms of uterine fibroids while helping to shrink them. Warm a bowl of Castor oil and then dampen a washcloth in the oil. Place the washcloth over your pelvic area for about 10 minutes. Once again, dampen the washcloth in the warm oil and place it over the pelvic area. Repeat this for a total of 30 to 60 minutes.

    Sitz Baths

    • Taking sitz baths once or twice a day helps to increase circulation in the pelvic area and reduce the inflammation and pain that is caused by fibroids. Run a bath that is as hot as your skin can handle with enough water to cover your pelvic area. Sit in the bath for 15 to 20 minutes. To enhance the therapeutic benefits of the sitz bath, you can add a few drops of relaxing herbal essential oils such as rosemary, lavender or chamomile to the bath.

    Considerations

    • If you choose to self-treat your uterine fibroids with natural remedies, it is essential that you first obtain the guidance and advice of a health care professional. You should also take a along a list of any prescriptions or supplements that you are currently taking. This is important because natural remedies can interfere with the effectiveness of some medications.
