How to Own a Hyperbaric Chamber

Hyperbaric chambers are tightly enclosed spaces in which the internal pressure is raised so that it is higher than the normal atmospheric pressure. Hyperbaric chambers can provide oxygen therapy for several medical issues, including decompression sickness, healing wounds, soft tissue infections and burns. They are also being used to treat symptoms of autism and diabetic illnesses. Portable chambers called "mild chambers" are available commercially for home treatment.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what you want to use your hyperbaric chamber for. These chambers are limited to very specific uses. Talk with your doctor to clarify whether one is appropriate for your needs. Be very clear about why you are using it and get specifications about the pressurization you will need.

    • 2

Compare specifications. Find out the maximum pressure the chamber reaches. This will be expressed either as atmospheres of pressure (ata) or pounds per square inch (psi). Mild chambers don't pressurize to the same degree as professional chambers, so the potential for side effects is reduced. Ask about the chamber's length, width and inflated diameter. Find out how the unit is inflated and deflated and how air flow is accomplished. Check the unit's weight to see if you will be able to transport it. Also ask about training and maintenance. Before purchasing, ask if you can "test" the chamber, or at least get inside one, to be sure you can tolerate the space.

    • 3

Request safety guidelines and procedures. Safety is paramount. Ask if the seller can give references of people who have used these chambers. This may not be possible because of privacy issues, but you should at least ask for verification of safety records.

    • 4

Decide whether to own or rent. A new portable hyperbaric chamber will range in price from about $3,000 to $30,000. If you don't have the money, ask the seller if the purchase can be financed or even rented monthly. Leases can begin as low as $150 a month for a limited time. This also may be a good way to try out the chamber before you commit to a purchase.
