Amoxicillin: What it is Used For

Amoxicillin, a drug that is effective against a number of diseases, is easily obtained through a prescription from a doctor. It is made up of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur.
  1. Identification

    • Amoxicillin is an off white, crystal-like antibiotic that prevents the growth of bacteria and viruses. It comes in either capsules or liquid suspension, which is flavored and colored to make it more palatable to children.

    Effects

    • Amoxicillin is effective against strep throat, pneumonia, gonorrhea, whooping cough, typhoid, cholera and meningitis.

    Warning

    • Possible side effects include fever, skin rash, joint pain, nausea, diarrhea and dehydration. Do not take amoxicillin if you're allergic to penicillin.

    Considerations

    • Amoxicillin can make birth control pills less effective. Use caution if you have asthma, leukemia, kidney disease or intestinal problems.

    • Amoxicillin is available under several names, such as Larotid, Amoxil, Trimox, Wymox, Polymox and Augmentin.
