Albenza Side Effects
Albenza is a prescription medication most commonly used to treat tapeworm infections but also sometimes prescribed for other parasitic infections. It is a classified as an anthelmintic that works by killing parasites, thereby treating tapeworm and other parasites. Albenza is typically prescribed to be taken twice a day. It is taken orally and should be taken with food. Patients who have difficulty swallowing pills can chew or crush the pills to help them take it.-
Non-Serious Side Effects

The most commonly reported side effects of Albenza are stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and headaches. Some patients may also experience dizziness because of the medication. Because of this, patients should use caution when driving or performing other tasks requiring concentration until they know how the medication will affect them.
Serious Side Effects

In rare cases, people taking Albenza may develop serious side effects that indicate that a potential complication has developed that may require treatment. Stop taking the medication and inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following: fever, chills or a sore throat; unusual bruising or bleeding; jaundice; decreased urination; dark urine; red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin; vision changes; unusual weakness or tiredness; and severe or persistent dizziness or headaches.
Allergic Reactions

Like most medications, it is possible for people taking Albenza to experience an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction include hives, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and swelling of the face, tongue, mouth or lips. An allergic reaction should be considered a medical emergency because people can go into shock or lose consciousness. In the event of a severe reaction, get medical help immediately.
Warnings

Albenza may not be safe for all patients, including those who are pregnant or breast-feeding and those with liver, bone marrow or eye problems and low white blood cell or platelet counts. Be sure to discuss your full medical history with your doctor before taking Albenza.
Drug Interactions

As with many medications, Albenza is known to interact with several other drugs, possibly causing dangerous interaction or increasing the likelihood of suffering side effects. Patients also taking praziquantel, cimetidine and dexamethasone are more likely to experience side effects. Taking Albenza with theophylline increases the chances of experiencing that drug's side effects. Be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist about any other drugs you are taking.
