Side Effects of Anticonvulsants

Anticonvulsants are neurological medications. They are used to treat seizures, pain,and in some cases mental illness when combined with an antidepressant or another medication. There are possible side effects with anti-convulsants, and being aware of some of them may help you and your doctor
  1. Blood and Liver

    • Anticonvulsants can give some people problems with abnormal blood count, especially if used for a good length of time. Liver function also may be affected. Both need to be monitored regularly by a doctor.

    Digestive Side Effects

    • Some anticonvulsants can cause nausea and vomiting. Constipation is also possible for some people, especially with Dilantin.

    Alertness and Balance Side Effects

    • Being dizzy, sleepy during the day, unsteady and experiencing poor balance are some of the things people who have side effects experience.

    Skin Reactions

    • Some people who take anticonvulsants may experience rashes, acne, easier bruising and ulcers in the mouth.

    Other Side Effects

    • Fever, sore throat, speech problems such as slurring words, being confused, feeling nervous and headaches are possible.
