Brandt-Daroff Exercise for Vertigo

Vertigo is often caused by a disorder of the inner ear caused labyrinthitis. The Brandt-Daroff exercise will assist in the improvement of discomfort, but it will not cure vertigo.
  1. How to Do the Exercise

    • Choose a location. Your bed is probably best but a couch will work, too. Sit up straight on the edge of the couch or bed, and then lie quickly on your side. Remain on your side until the feelings of vertigo subside. After 30 seconds, sit up whether you still feel dizzy or not. Remain seated until the vertigo feelings are gone. Repeat on the opposite side. Alternate 20 times in each direction. The exercise can be done twice or more daily.

    Warnings

    • Do not lie down so fast that you are in danger of injuring your neck or hitting your head. Begin the exercise on the side that causes the most severe feelings of vertigo. The exercise may cause more vertigo feelings and nausea but stick with it.

    Frequency

    • Two to three times a day is good. An improvement in symptoms generally takes about 30 sets of exercises. Three times a day would mean you should feel better in 10 days. Two times a day would take 15 days. This is a generalization.

    Benefits

    • You may feel better instantly from the exercises. You may also only feel better marginally. It may take weeks before you notice a significant improvement.

    Form

    • Maintain a straight neck when you are lying down and sitting up during this exercise. This means your neck will stay in line with your spine.
