Uses of Aquacel
Aquacel is a dressing that combines hydro-fiber with silver to dress serious wounds where there is an infection or risk of an infection. It is produced by the company ConvTec USA.-
Function
-
Aquacel works by acting as an antimicrobial agent on the dressed wound. One dressing works for 7 days and works to kill bacteria that causes diseases such as a staph infection.
Silver
-
Silver acts as an antimicrobial agent that can not only fight off bacteria but heal infection. It is more beneficial than other treatments because it's painless and does not inflame the wound.
Amount
-
Aquacel dressings only have 1 part per million of ionic silver available as antimicrobial defense. Any more is would react with the wound and cause skin staining. The silver is evenly distributed throughout the dressing.
Variations
-
ConvaTec USA also produces Aquacel without the silver. This form of the product is used on non-infected wounds to help absorb fluid from a weeping wound and to help reduce pain.
Ribbon
-
Aquacel is also available in ribbon form that is 20 times stronger than the pad form and does not have the issues with shrinkage of other forms.
