Cures for Tinea Cruris

Tinea cruris, a condition more commonly known as jock itch, is a fungal infection that typically affects the groin, genitals and buttocks. It is characterized by a red, itchy rash on the affected region. Tinea cruris is much more prevalent in men than women, and it is more common in people who are overweight because the infection can breed in the skin folds. Jock itch is most commonly caused by moisture or friction in the skin folds near the groin or genitals, but it can also be caused by contact with fungus or bacteria.
  1. Anti-Fungal Medications

    • In mild cases, tinea cruris may clear up on its own without treatment, but more commonly an anti-fungal medication will be needed to cure the infection. Anti-fungal medications are available in many forms, including creams, lotions, shampoos and powders. Most often, any over-the-counter, anti-fungal products will be sufficient to cure a case of jock itch. In the most severe cases, a prescription-strength medication may be necessary. Rarely are anti-fungal pills prescribed as treatment, but they are available.

    Hygiene

    • Good hygiene is key to preventing jock itch, and curing it once an infection develops. It is important to practice good hygiene, including taking a shower or bath daily, especially after exercising or exerting yourself to the point that you become sweaty. After bathing, make sure to thoroughly dry the genitals with a clean, dry towel. If you cannot take a shower immediately after exercising or becoming excessively sweaty, at least be sure to dry the groin region with a clean, dry towel. If necessary, you can also apply a powder to the groin to help keep the area dry.

    Prevention Tips

    • In some cases, jock itch can be caused by tight- or ill-fitting clothing. Make sure to wear loose-fitting clothes when exercising. For men, make sure your athletic supporter is not too tight as well because that can cause jock itch. It's also important to dress appropriately for the weather. If you will be outdoors in a hot, humid environment, avoid wearing thick or heavy clothes that will absorb your sweat and keep your skin moist. If you exercise at a health club or fitness center, be sure to wipe down any machines with a clean, dry towel before you use them. Finally, if you develop athlete's foot, another common fungal infection, make sure to treat it promptly because otherwise it may spread to the groin area.
