How to Treat Xerostomia
Xerostomia, also known as dry mouth, is a medical condition where there is not enough saliva in the mouth. Saliva is necessary to rid the mouth of plaque, sugar and debris. There is a connection with dry mouth leading to tooth decay and periodontal disease. The condition of Xerostomia increases with age and may be linked to certain medications, medical conditions (diabetes, Sjogren's syndrome, stroke and others), and even emotional stress. - Toothpaste, mouthwash and products made especially for dry mouth syndrome

Make sure to drink water throughout the day to help with the dry mouth and to prevent dehydration. Drinking eight to 10 glasses of water is recommended. Carry a water bottle with you all the time. Avoid consuming tea, coffee and alcohol which may decrease saliva production.

The use of sugar-free gum or hard candy may help increase the amount of saliva.

Moisten foods by drinking water or use gravy to make it easier to swallow. Try to avoid eating dry foods such as crackers, toast or cookies without softening them first with liquid. Also stay away from salty foods.

Stay away from smoking, as it is a major cause of xerostomia.

Visit your dentist regularly. Your dentist may prescribe flouride treatments to prevent cavities. Maintain meticulous oral hygiene at home using special toothpaste and rinses manufactured for dry mouth syndrome (like Biotene). Make sure the mouthwash does not contain alcohol. Add lip balms for dry lips and in the creases of the mouth.

Breathe through your nose instead of your mouth. Keep the room air moist by using a humidifier.
