The Steps
-
1
Make an appointment with your doctor if you have any of the symptoms of parasite infection. Symptoms may include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach cramping.
-
2
Get testing through your doctor to confirm worm infection. A doctor will likely require that you submit a stool sample in order to check for larvae passed through the bowels. If the test comes back positive, he will give you a prescription for ivermectin.
-
3
Take a single dose of the ivermectin in order to treat the parasitic worm infection. Ivermectin is available in 3 mg tablets and the number of pills required for your single dose will depend on your body weight. According to the Mayo Clinic, the typical amount is 150 mcg per single kilogram of a person's body weight.
-
4
Time your dose of ivermectin to occur at least an hour before breakfast in the morning. You should take the medication on an empty stomach with a full eight ounce glass of water.
-
5
Repeat the dosage of ivermectin if indicated by your doctor at your follow-up visit. He may recommend that you take another single dose of ivermectin at three- to 12-month intervals to make sure the parasite is gone.
