Fevers in Children

A fever is a body temperature that is higher than usual. A fever by itself does not necessarily indicate a serious medical condition. Fever is actually a common response of a body that is fighting an infection.
  1. Temperature Ranges

    • Normal temperature ranges between 97 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit; low-grade fever ranges between 99.1 to 100.9 degrees Fahrenheit; common fever ranges between 101 to 103.5 degrees Fahrenheit; high fever is 103.6 degrees Fahrenheit and higher.

    Viral and Bacterial Infections

    • Viral infections are common causes of fever in children; generally not dangerous, this fever will end within days without medication. Bacterial infections can also cause fever, and are treatable with antibiotics.

    Thermometers

    • Use a rectal thermometer for infants under one year old, an ear thermometer for young children older than one year old, and an oral thermometer for older children and teenagers.

    Treatment

    • Acetaminophen relieves pain and lowers fever. Check with a doctor for accurate dosage. Hydrate with cool liquids to drink. Never give children under the age of 19 aspirin or aspirin-containing products.

    Medical Attention

    • Call a doctor if your infant is 3 months or younger with a temperature above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, or if a child has fever and other symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea and loss of consciousness.
