Under Eye Dark Circle Treatments
Dark circles under the eye can be difficult to conceal. Unlike blemishes, which are usually some shade of red, under eye circles are usually a dark blue or blackish color. The darkness of these circles can be diminished with the application of makeup. There are also several treatments that can be rather effective. However, there are no overnight cures. Results may take a few days to a few weeks to be noticeable.-
Cooling Agents
-
Cucumber slices over the eyes have been used for ages and continue to be a popular home remedy for tired eyes. In addition to reducing swelling, when cucumber slices are placed directly on the dark circles for a minimum of five minutes per day, this can help to lighten the skin around the eyes. Potato slices instead of cucumbers can be used. A cold compress such as a washcloth or towel, placed over the eyes for several minutes, can have the same effect.
Creams
-
Under eye creams for the treatment of dark circles can be purchased over-the-counter. Reading the list of ingredients can help to narrow down the choices. Creams with natural ingredients such as vitamin K, vitamin E and chamomile have multiple effects. Vitamin K and vitamin E soften skin and prevent swelling. Chamomile has an anti-inflammatory quality. Peptides and retinol increase the production of collagen which helps to thicken skin, making the circles less visible.
Hydration
-
The skin around the eye area is especially delicate. Since it is very thin, it is also more transparent. For thicker, healthier skin it is important to stay hydrated. Drinking six to eight glasses of water each day and limiting alcohol intake help to avoid dehydration, which can make the skin dry.
Sun Exposure
-
Sun exposure contributes to dry skin. It also increases the production of melanin which can make under eye circles appear darker. Therefore, protect the skin under the eyes by using sunscreen specifically made for application to the face. Facial sunscreen is less harsh on the skin than regular sunscreen.
Concealer
-
Under eye circles can be covered with makeup if applied appropriately. First, apply under eye cream to keep the skin moist. A few dabs of concealer around the eye area can be applied once the cream dries. The concealer should be a shade lighter than the foundation and have a yellowish tint to counteract the bluish/blackish circles. Using mascara on the lid of the upper eye only (and not the lower lid) also helps to draw attention from the dark circles.
Misconceptions
-
Dark circles under eyes are frequently associated with lack of sleep, tiredness, stress or depression. Although these conditions may worsen the appearance of circles, they do not cause them. The cause is actually the failure of blood vessels called capillaries to filter all blood cells in the eye area. Unfiltered blood cells lack hemoglobin, the substance that gives blood vessels their reddish color, and turn bluish black.
