How to Heal a Fatty Liver
A fatty liver (also known as Steatosis or Steatohepatitis)can be caused by several different factors including alcohol consumption, obesity, medication induced, diabetes or diseases that affect the metabolism of fat. Individuals typically do not suffer from symptoms from fatty liver, and typically discover the condition after undergoing other various medical tests (blood work, CT scans, ultrasounds). This disease can eventually cause Cirrhosis of the liver if left untreated. The following steps can help you reduce your risk for a fatty liver, or help reverse the condition.Things You'll Need

Those who drink excessive amounts of alcohol and suffer from fatty liver can improve with decrease or cessation of alcohol consumption. It has been noted that many people who drink alcohol and have this condition have seen a reversal in the fatty liver once they stop consuming excessive amounts of alcohol.

Consumption of certain medications can also cause a fatty liver. The medications that are known to elevate liver enzymes and create a fatty liver include: amiodarone, methotrexate, high doses of vitamin A, tetracycline, cortisone, phosphorus, prednisone and carbon tetrachloride. Talk to your doctor to determine whether the medications you are taking could be causing your fatty liver. (Medication information provided by the California Pacific Medical Center)

Obesity can also cause an individual to have a fatty liver. It is important to address obesity when a fatty liver has been diagnosed. Decreasing one's weight can help improve the condition of the liver; however, weight loss should be achieved safely at 1-2 lbs per week for optimal results.

Exercise and diet are extremely important in individuals who have been diagnosed with a fatty liver. By exercising regularly (at least 30 minutes daily, 3-5 days per week) and consuming a diet that is low in fat and properly nutritionally balanced, it is possible to reverse the condition and to return the liver to its normal functionality.

Typically, medications are not effective on this condition; however, it is sometimes recommended that taking a L-carnitine dose of 340 mg twice a day, or lecithin and choline, to potentially decrease the severity of a fatty liver.
