How to Cure Trich

Trichotillomania, nicknamed "trich," is a condition that creates an urge to pull hair from the body, including the scalp, eyebrows, legs and other parts of the body. Links to trichotillomania have been discovered in a genetic mutation found in its sufferers, SLITRK1, a gene also linked to Tourette syndrome. Although it is difficult to treat trichotillomania, it is not impossible.

Consult your primary care physician. Tell her the problem you have been having and your doctor will be able to connect you with a psychiatrist and psychologist.

    • 2

Take prescription antidepressants. Your psychiatrist, after diagnosing that you have trichotillomania, can prescribe you with an antidepressant that can help treat your urge to pull. Examples of antidepressants used to treat trich include Celexa and Paxil.

    • 3

Get psychotherapy. Talk therapy with a licensed therapist, psychologist or psychological social worker has proven to be effective in conjunction with taking antidepressant medications for treating trich.

    • 4

Take hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy is a form of hypnosis and therapy that is practiced by a trained hypnotherapist. Your psychiatrist or psychologist can recommend a hypnotherapist to help you. Hypnotherapy, although not medically proven to always cure trichotillomania, has proved helpful in some individual cases.

Practice biofeedback. A biofeedback therapist can teach you to train your body to resist your impulses, like the urge to pick at your hair. Although biofeedback does not work right away, once your body has been trained to work this way, it may become like 2nd nature and make it far easier to resist the urges to pull your hair.
