Symptoms of Peri Menopause

Peri menopause is the period in a woman's life that leads up to menopause. Peri menopause generally can last anywhere from a year to several years. A woman is considered to be in menopause after she has not had a period for a full year. The symptoms of peri menopause are caused by the fluctuating levels of estrogen in the body.
  1. Decline in Fertility

    • While there is a decline in fertility during peri menopause, it is still possible to become pregnant. Women who wish to become pregnant during this time generally use fertility enhancing medications and treatments. Women who do not wish to become pregnant during peri menopause should continue to use birth control.

    Bladder Problems and Vaginal Problems

    • As the amount of estrogen in your body fluctuates and lessens, you may experience dryness and a lack of lubrication in your vagina. This has the potential of making intercourse difficult or painful. Some women experience greater difficulty with bladder control.

    Menstrual Irregularity

    • One of the first signs of peri menopause is a change in the timing, length, duration or severity of your period. Some women have their periods more frequently, while others go for a longer time without any period. The amount of flow may change as well.

    Mood Shifts

    • Irritability, sudden mood changes, unpredictability in reaction, depression, confusion, forgetfulness can all be signs of peri menopause. If the symptoms become debilitating or are very disrupting to every day life, it is wise to seek a medical consultation. Your doctor can prescribe medication to help deal with the problems you are experiencing during peri menopause.

    Risk of Bone Loss

    • Women in peri menopause are at risk for osteoporosis. As estrogen declines, there is greater risk of bone loss. It is important for women in peri menopause to be sure they are getting enough calcium in their diets or are taking a dietary calcium supplement.

    Flashes and Sweats

    • Some women experience night sweats during this time of life. Others have hot flashes during the day, and some women experience both. Trouble sleeping with frequent trips to the bathroom during the night is not uncommon.

    Symptom Relief

    • It is important for women in peri menopause to take good care of themselves. This means getting plenty of sleep, eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. Drink plenty of water, consume less alcohol and be sure to get enough calcium and vitamins. It is important to talk to your health care practitioner about the symptoms you are experiencing.
