Chronic Prostatitis Symptoms
Chronic prostatitis is a disease of the prostate gland, the walnut-sized gland located below the bladder in men which is responsible for producing fluid that is a component of semen. There are several types of prostatitis and all share the same basic symptoms. The term "chronic" refers to prostatitis that lasts at least three months or recurs over time. The primary symptom of prostatitis is a degree of pain and discomfort due to inflammation.-
Pain
-
The most common symptom that someone with chronic prostatitis will encounter is pain. This pain will typically run through the perineum, which is the area between the penis and the anus, and may emanate into the groin and pelvis itself. For some, this pain will be isolated to the penis and testicles. For others, it can be felt within the lower back and the abdominal region of the body.
Urinary Disturbance
-
With chronic prostatitis, a man can also suffer from a urinary disturbance. When this symptom is present, it may manifest as a burning or stinging sensation during urination, a recurring difficulty in urination, or more urgent need to urinate.
Ejaculatory Pain
-
Another common symptom of chronic prostatitis is pain or discomfort upon ejaculation. Typically, this pain will be sudden and unexpected and will quickly dissipate after ejaculation is complete. Much like urinary pain, this pain can sting or burn and will vary in intensity from person to person.
Treatment
-
With chronic prostatitis, treatment will usually begin with lessening the symptoms of the pain. Medications like alpha blockers can help bring some relief to urinary disturbances. Anti-inflammatory medications will treat infections. In some cases, a doctor may choose to massage the prostate to bring it to a more relaxed state, which also reduces the symptoms of pain and urinary disturbance.
Asymptomatic Prostatitis
-
In some cases a man will not have any symptoms of the disease; inflammation of the prostate will be discovered by the doctor during routine examination or testing for another condition.
