Symptoms of a Pinched Nerve in the Lower Back

If someone were to suffer from a pinched nerve, it would actually mean that some sort of pressure was being placed on the nerve itself. When it comes to the lower back, this pressure is usually from a herniated disk, which is a condition where the inner layer of the cartilage ruptures out through outermost layer. As this happens, it can place pressure on one or more nerves within the spine, causing a number of uncomfortable symptoms.

Pain

• For most people, a pinched nerve in the lower back will cause the symptom of pain. This pain will usually start in and around the lumbar region of the spine. From there, it can emanate out into other regions of the body, like the hip and buttock as well as down a single leg. And depending the severity of the pressure, the pain experienced within the back, buttock, hip and leg can feel anywhere from a dull discomfort to a piercing burn.

Numbness

• Another common symptom of a pinched nerve in the lower back involves a certain amount of numbness. What happens in this situation is that the pressure placed on the nerve can affect it in such a way that the area itself begins to almost lack any feeling at all. And much like the symptom of pain, this numbness doesn't always stay isolated to the lower back. Sometimes, it will extend down into the buttock and associated leg.

Tingling

• At one time or another, most people have experienced a foot or hand that has "fallen asleep." With a pinched nerve, this same tingling or prickling sensation, according to the Mayo Clinic, can actually plague a person's lower back as well as buttock, leg and foot. It's all dependent on how someone's body reacts to the pressure placed on the affected nerve.

Weakness

• It's also completely possible that a pinched nerve in the lower back can result in an increased amount of weakness within the muscles of the leg. Typically, this weakness or debility will only affect one leg, but can often stretch down into the foot.

Reduced Mobility

• If the pinched nerve is a result of a herniated disk, which is most likely the case, a person will inevitably experience a reduced mobility within the lumbar region. This will impede on certain movements, like bending, twisting and straightening.

Bodily Functions

• Though not extremely common, some people with a pinched nerve can lose control of both the bladder and the bowel. If this were to happen, the individual would need immediate care from a medical professional.
