Cold Feet Remedies

Cold feet can become a very discomforting ailment to deal with, especially when trying to go to sleep. They are caused by poor circulation and this may be due to a number of factors. Sitting and standing for long periods cuts of the circulatory flow, leaving it weaker, and a general lack of physical activity will also weaken circulation. There are foods and movements that can increase circulation and alleviate the discomfort of cold feet.
  1. Cause

    • Cold feet are caused by circulatory problems. This can occur from sitting or standing all day at work as both of these activities stop movement and blood flow through the lower extremities. It may also be caused by nicotine addiction, hormone imbalances or an unhealthy diet.

    Solution

    • Circulation needs to be restored to the feet to alleviate the discomfort of cold feet. This can be done by massaging the feet. The best way to improve circulation to the feet is to actually massage from the calf muscles to the feet. When massaging the feet to improve circulation, massage the toes in a circular motion. Pointing and flexing the feet will also improve circulation and restore the blood flow.

    Assistance

    • Herbs such as cayenne pepper are good for circulation. Taking a blend of cayenne pepper, ginger, garlic and ginkgo biloba will greatly improve circulation throughout the whole body. Warming essential oils such as cinnamon oil and red pepper oil can also alleviate the discomfort of cold feet and improve circulation. Essential oils and herbs can be purchased from health food stores. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish can also help to keep arteries clear and circulation strong.

    Considerations

    • Exercise and diet play a part in assisting with healthy circulation. Fatty foods that clog up the arteries and add strain to the digestive system slow down circulation. Drinking lots of water and consuming a lot of fruit and vegetables will help to ensure that your body doesn't become clogged up. Likewise, exercise gets the heart pumping blood throughout the entire body. A daily exercise routine will greatly improve health and circulation.

    Prevention

    • To prevent cold feet and improve circulation, include plenty of ginger, garlic and cayenne pepper in your diet. Add the herbs to meals daily. Do 30 to 40 minutes of exercise daily, even during winter. This can be a simple walk if that's the most you are able to mange. Make sure you stretch daily if your work requires you to sit or stand for many hours at a time.
