What Are the Dangers of Using Lindane?

Lindane may seem like a miracle drug when it comes to getting rid of head or pubic lice and scabies, which are little mites that burrow beneath the skin. But this potent drug, sold in the form of a lotion of shampoo, also has its hazards. Folks who use lindane in any form should strictly follow directions. Others who are at a greater risk for detrimental side effects from lindane should meet with their doctors before even considering trying it.
  1. Severe Side Effects

    • Seizures and even death can result from improper use or an allergic reaction to lindane. Since the drug works by attacking the nervous system of parasites, it also has the potential to cause great harm to the human body. Other severe reactions could include having difficulty breathing, a tight feeling in the chest, vomiting, and becoming dizzy or drowsy. A swollen face, lips, mouth or tongue are another option. Seek immediate medical attention if severe reactions occur.

    Milder Side Effects

    • Some milder side effects of lindane can include a number of skin conditions. The most common include a rash, redness and burning or stinging sensation. Hives are another possibility, as are dermatitis, hair loss and a continuous feeling of itchiness. These, too, should merit a trip to the doctor.

    Unknown Side Effects

    • Women who are breast feeding, pregnant, or may become pregnant while using lindane should definitely talk to their doctors before using the drug. It is unknown if lindane would affect the unborn baby, but it is known that it passes into breast milk.

    Risky Users

    • Those who are especially at risk for detrimental side effects include the very young, folks 65 or older, and anyone who weighs under 110 pounds. Others who should also seek a doctor's advice before trying the drug include people with epilepsy, HIV or AIDS, those who have had a bad reaction to lindane in the past, or anyone who has used lindane in the last several months. Anyone with a history of seizures, either from an injury, heavy drinking or liver damage, should also seek a doctor's advice before using lindane.

    Proper Usage

    • Lindane is a topical medication, meaning it's imperative to be used only externally. It should also be used sparingly, according to directions or doctor's orders, and specifically on the areas in which it's needed. It should never be used on the face and anyone who accidentally gets it into his nose, eyes or mouth should flush it out with cold water immediately. If accidentally swallowed, get to the doctor. Lindane can also be dangerous if it's used as a preventative measure for people who are not affected by the lice or scabies.
