Macrobid Side Effects

Macrobid is a prescription antibiotic used to treat bladder and urinary tract infections caused by bacteria. Macrobid kills bacteria by interfering with the chemical processes within the bacteria. It is taken orally in pill form and is usually prescribed to be taken twice a day, in the morning and at night. As with all antibiotics, it is important to take all the medicine prescribed, even if symptoms disappear within a few days. Not finishing a course of Macrobid could allow the infection to return.

  1. Neurological Symptoms

    • Drowsiness and dizziness are known side effects of Macrobid, and although they are no indication of a problem, users should be careful until they know how the medication affects them. Some neurological side effects of Macrobid could signify a problem and should be reported to a doctor. These include bizarre or unusual behavior, numbness or a tingling sensation in the fingers and toes and a feeling of increased pressure in the head.

    Gastrointestinal Symptoms

    • Mild nausea and vomiting along with a loss of appetite are sometimes reported by people taking Macrobid, but they do not signify a possible complication. However, you should inform your doctor if you experience severe diarrhea, bloody stools or stomach pain and cramps while taking Macrobid.

    Illness Symptoms

    • Some side effects of Macrobid are similar to those people experience when they have common illnesses such as a cold or the flu. A fever or chills may occur in some people, but it is no cause for concern. However, a chronic cough and general malaise or discomfort should be reported to your doctor.

    Other Non-Serious Side Effects

    • Other known side effects of Macrobid include a mild cough and mild to moderate headaches. These side effects are not an indication of a problem, but should be reported to your doctor if they become bothersome.

    Other Serious Side Effects

    • Some other side effects of Macrobid could signify a problem that needs to be reported to your doctor in case treatment is needed. These include an inflammed pancreas, which is characterized by an increased pulse, stomach tenderness and nausea and vomiting; chest pain; shortness of breath; and jaundice.
