Side Effects of Testosterone Gel

Testosterone is a very important hormone in the body. It functions to preserve muscle mass, bone health and energy and is a sex hormone. Often times, men resort to using a testosterone-boosting supplement such as testosterone gel because they've been diagnosed with having low levels. This might be effective, but it can also come with some side effects.
  1. Features

    • Testosterone gels are applied to the areas of the shoulders, arms or abdomen once a day on dry, freshly cleaned skin. The gel then absorbs into the skin and it has to completely dry before any clothes can be put on. After it has absorbed into the skin, any contact with water, such as showering and swimming, should be avoided for at least five hours.

    Acne

    • Testosterone gel can cause acne. While this condition is usually the cause of hormonal imbalances and generally affects teens, acne is also a symptom of testosterone gels. When acne appears, it can be seen on the face, shoulders and back.

    Enlargement

    • Gynecomastia is a condition that causes male breast enlargement. This generally occurs in older men or adolescents who are going through puberty. It can be caused from hormonal imbalances such as having too much estrogen in the body or it can be caused from various steroidal compounds such as testosterone gel.

    Prostate

    • The prostate is a small gland in males that sits in front of the rectum. It is responsible for regulating the flow of semen and urine from the body. When it becomes infected or enlarged, various effects can occur such as difficulty urinating and having a weak urine stream. Another side effect of testosterone gel is that it can cause problems with the prostate, including an increased risk of developing cancer.

    Prevention/Solution

    • There are some very specific precautions involved with the use of testosterone gels. They are flammable and smoking should not be done while using them. If you previously had liver, heart or kidney problems and you develop swelling in your extremities, you should consult your physician and stop using the gel immediately. There should be no contact with women or children whatsoever as they can suffer adverse reactions. Hands should be washed really well after applying the gel, so it does not contact anyone else.
