What Does Sporanox Treat?

Sporanox is an antibiotic designed to treat fungal infections that occur in the mouth, fingernails, lungs and other parts of the body. The drug works by killing fungi in the body and preventing new fungus from growing. It usually takes a minimum of three months for Sporanox to treat fungal infections. The drug is approved by the FDA and is only available by prescription.
  1. Identification

    • There are three types of fungal infections that Sporanox is designed to treat: aspergillosi, blastomycosis, and histoplasmosis. These fungal infections can occur anywhere in the body. Sporanox can also be used to treat patients with low white blood cell counts, as these patients are at an increased risk of developing a fungal infection.

    Considerations

    • Common side effects of Sporanox can include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, rashes and high blood pressure. Congestive heart failure and hepatitis are two possible, yet rare, side effects. Contact your physician immediately if you have symptoms of heart failure such as shortness of breath, fluid retention or abdominal or heart pain. You should also contact your physician concerning any common side effects that become severe or persist for more than a few days.

    Warning

    • People who are allergic to anti-fungal medications, are pregnant or could become pregnant or have had congestive heart failure should not take Sporanox. Tell your doctor about any prescriptions or non-prescription medications you are taking, especially chemotherapy drugs, anti-diabetic drugs or anti-seizure medications. Sporanox could interfere with these medications.

    Features

    • Sporanox is available in liquid or capsule form and is usually taken once or twice a day. If you take antacids, wait at least an hour before you take them, as they could interfere with the absorption of Sporanox into your system. It is important to take the medication at the same time every day. Always follow your physician's instructions for taking Sporanox.

    Considerations

    • Sporanox should be stored at room temperature away from excessive light and heat. It should not be stored in the bathroom.
