TMJ Symptoms of Nausea

TMJ, short for temporomandibular joint disorder, is a term that signifies stress and inflammation around the temporomandibular joint, which is where the jaw connects to the skull.
  1. Significance

    • Because TMJ is a common condition, a variety of symptoms are associated with TMJ, including clicking or popping of the jaw, headaches, nausea, dizziness, earaches and ringing in the ears.

    Time Frame

    • You may notice jaw clicking before you notice any secondary side effects such as jaw pain, nausea or swelling of the jaw. It may take years before your TMJ becomes severe enough to cause nausea.

    Treatment

    • See a doctor if you are experiencing nausea from your TMJ. He may offer you a bite guard, massage therapy or pain medication to stop the nausea from occurring.

    Prevention/Solution

    • A massage therapist will show you how to open and close your jaw so it does not click and cause joint distress. Pain medication will lessen the symptoms but will not eliminate the problem.

    Warning

    • If you experience vomiting, inability to chew or swallow, or severe swelling, go to the emergency room.
