Scabies, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is an itchy skin condition that is caused by the tiny human itch mite that burrows beneath the skin and lays eggs. Fortunately, it is easily treated with medications.-

Contagious

Scabies is very contagious and a common world-wide condition. It is passed easily between family members, children in daycare, nursing homes or prisons from skin-to-skin contact.
Over-the-Counter Medications

Scabicides are creams and lotions that kill the scabies mites and their eggs, and they are available by prescription. The Mayo Clinic also recommends Permathrin, which is available in a 5 percent cream and is used to treat and kill scabies.

According to the Mayo Clinic, U.S. brand names include Acticin, Elimite and Nix Creme Rinse. In Canada, look for Nix and Nix Dermal Creme.
Other Precautions

Wash all clothing, bedding, towels and washcloths in hot water, or have clothing cleaned and sealed in airtight plastic for 2 weeks.Vacuum floors and furniture. Wash combs, hairbrushes and toys in very hot water.
Home Remedies

Mayo Clinic has several suggestions to help ease the discomfort from itching. First, soak in a cool tub or apply cool washcloths. Antihistamines may relieve an allergic reaction and discomfort. Calamine lotion can relieve irritation and itching.
