Which Medicines Affect PSA Levels?

PSA stands for prostate specific antigen. It is often used as a screening test to detect prostatic cancer. PSA levels can also be elevated due to a condition known as benign prostatic hypertrophy or due to certain activities, such as bicycle riding. Additionally, PSA levels can be affected by various medications.
  1. Finasteride

    • One medication that can affect PSA levels is finasteride, which goes by the brand name Proscar or Propecia. This medication can cause your PSA levels to be decreased.

    Dutasteride

    • Dutasteride, also called Avodart, is a medication for benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can result in lower than normal PSA levels.

    Cyclophosphamide

    • Cyclophosphamide is an alkylating agent used to treat some kinds of cancers. High doses can alter PSA levels, causing them to be elevated.

    Methotrexate

    • Methotrexate is a chemical compound often used to suppress the immune system in order to treat certain cancers and for transplant patients. It can also lead to altered PSA levels.

    Viagra and Cialis

    • Viagra and Cialis, while not directly affecting PSA levels, do promote sexual activity. Recent ejaculation (within 48 hours of the test) can cause PSA levels to be elevated.
