Dry Bitter Mouth Symptoms

Dry bitter mouth, as the name implies, is transient and often embarrassing condition in which a person suddenly experiences unusually dry mouth and bitter taste sensations even to sweet foods. The onset of dry bitter mouth symptoms may be caused by autoimmune diseases such as diabetes, tumor, aging or dehydration. These symptoms may also be caused by the side-effects of certain medications.
  1. Bitter Taste

    • The condition causes bitter taste due to possible infection such as candidiasis or underlying systemic conditions due to lack or reduced production of saliva.

    Dry Mouth

    • The dryness in the mouth is mainly due to lack of saliva, which may be caused by dehydration. As a result, the mouth becomes tender and vulnerable to bacterial and fungal infections.

    Bad Breath

    • Bad breath is a common symptom of dry mouth. The lack of saliva or fluid passing in the mouth causes some infectious bacteria to settle in the mouth and produce high levels of sulfur gases.

    Burning Tongue Syndrome

    • Hormonal imbalance, a common cause of dry bitter mouth, is directly linked to burning tongue syndrome. With that, burning sensations and tenderness on the tongue is usually experienced due to dryness.

    Pain

    • The dryness in the mouth also leaves the tongue very dry. This makes the tongue extra tender and very sensitive. Even a slight scrape onto the mouth linings or gentle brushing makes the condition indescribably painful.

    Roughness of the Throat

    • Due to the lack of passing saliva, reduced production or saliva and possible dehydration, dry bitter mouth sufferers experienced roughness on the throat.
