What Can Bring Down Triglycerides?

Triglycerides work in conjunction with cholesterol to form blood lipids, which are fatty substances. When they get elevated, the body is prone to heart complications and disease. There are several ways to lower triglycerides levels.
  1. Carbs

    • Simple carbs, which absorb quickly in the blood stream, are a contributor to high triglycerides. Eliminating carbs that are processed and refined can help lower levels.

    Fats

    • Omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce triglyceride levels according to a study done by the P.K. Russel group at Harvard. They can be found in cold water fish and in supplement form.

    Medication

    • There are certain prescription drugs that can help lower triglyceride levels. One common one is called Niaspan.

    Extract

    • Several different extracts can help to reduce triglyceride levels. These include guggulipid, turmeric and green tea extract (See Resources for extracts).

    Exercise

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, exercising for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week can help reduce triglycerides (See Resources for exercise).
