Symptoms of Nerve Damage in the Back

People who suffer nerve damage in the back, due to a pinched nerve, herniated disc or some other trauma, will commonly begin to suffer symptoms of the injury immediately, indicating to them that there is a problem. However, due to the way in which our bodies often react to pain and injury, some people may not begin to suffer from any signs of the damage until much later. N```o matter how your body reacts to this type of damage, you'll most likely experience one or more of the hallmarks of this condition.
  1. Pain

    • Many people who have suffered nerve damage in their backs will experience some sort of pain. It may be sharp and shooting or dull and throbbing. It may also be isolated to the back or shoot down into the leg.

    Numbness

    • Another fairly common symptom of nerve damage is a near-numbness or tingling sensation emanating from the area of damage. It may also spread out into other areas of the back and even down the leg.

    Weakness

    • When someone has suffered nerve damage in the back, he will usually experience a certain amount of weakness or loss of strength to that area of the body.

    Limited Movement

    • The damage to a nerve in the back may also begin to limit a person's movement, making it more difficult to bend or even sit without pain and discomfort.

    Spasms

    • Many times, nerve damage within the area of the back may elicit the muscles to spasm or twitch.

    Constipation

    • Due to the area of the nerve damage, many people will begin to suffer a seemingly unrelated symptom of constipation. This is due to the contraction of the back muscles as a result of the nerve damage, which causes a person to become constipated.
