Symptoms of Nerve Damage in the Hand

When you suffer nerve damage in the hand, you will usually have experienced some sort of damage to either the sensory nerves, which are those that dictate sense of touch, or the motor nerves, which instigate movement. Since the nerve damage is isolated to the hand, you will experience some very particular conditions, though they will vary based on the type of nerve that's been damaged.
  1. Numbness

    • One of the most common symptoms of nerve damage in the hands will involve a sense of numbness, namely when the sensory nerves are involved. It may also manifest as a tingling or burning sensation within the area of the affected hand.

    Pain

    • Depending on the severity of nerve damage, you may also begin to experience intermittent or persistent pain in the hand. This may be an overall pain or isolated to a single finger or wrist.

    Weakness

    • If you experience damage to a motor nerve in the hand, you may begin to suffer from a certain level of weakness. It may vary from less strength in your grip to a weakened ability to hold something in your hand.

    Twitching

    • You may also begin to notice some twitching or spasms within a muscle of the hand due to one of the motor nerves being damaged.

    Sensitivity

    • Another fairly common sign of nerve damage, specifically with damage to the sensory nerves, is a heightened sensitivity to any outside stimulus brought into contact with your hand.

    Paralysis

    • Some people who have suffered nerve damage in their hand have also experienced paralysis within the hand.
