Talk to your doctor. Before you ever try to treat long-lasting periods, you should talk to your doctor. An abnormal menstrual cycle may be a symptom of a more serious condition that simply a long-lasting period.

Apply the progesterone cream to the specified area of the body. Depending on the type of progesterone cream you are using, your doctor will specify the area (or areas) in which you are to apply the cream. Some products are administered directly to the vagina while others will alternate between the buttocks, inner thighs, stomach, wrists, inner arms or neck. You'll most likely apply an "applicatorful" upon each administration, which is a predetermined amount set by the package.

Continue to apply the progesterone cream as directed. Typically, your doctor will suggest using the progesterone supplement for a total of six applications, administering the cream to your body every other day.

Consult your doctor if you experience no change in your period as the dosage may need to be changed. Your doctor will normally prescribe a 4 percent concentration to treat abnormalities in a woman's menstruation. When this treatment doesn't work, he may opt to increase the dosage to an 8 percent solution.

Apply the new concentration to the body following the same application recommendation (every other day for a total of six applications).
